CHAPTER 22
PRESENTED
Kim Junkookâs father, Park Bong, proved an irritable individual no taller than his short gay son. No one briefed Nexus as to his actual age, which appeared 20 in his eyes, because well-kept Asians looked young to him at 25. He looked Nexus over from head to toe, lips pursed in petulant disapproval. Caio he dismissed with barely a glance.
The quartet arrived for their audience at the Palace an hour late. First, Nexus didnât comm Caio in time, to collect his apartment and wardrobe from Lilac Bay. Caio needed time to politely disengage from his paramour du jour, shower, then retrieve Jace and Dev, presently occupied with similar lady friends. Today it was Caioâs turn to mentor the younger men. Naturally they asked how to score with babes.
Once his clothes returned, Nexus needed to dress for the Palace. Caio wasnât invited, but Nexus begged him. The Brazilian studied their wardrobes and called Junkook and Jun-hee to come dress them, or expect a come-as-you-are, including Caio in his fabulous graphite-with-red-streaks gandy, the âaction figureâ suit. Which served him well for picking up women of a certain bent.
Nexus intended to wear Penguin, the same brown-and-lavender outfit heâd worn for his media interview on Tortola. Neither of them looked so pedestrian by the time Junkook polished them. Both wore their mask projectors to render them beautiful people, skin and hair flawless and luminous, their starter gandies from Luna camouflaged as shot silk of purple and green for Nexus, graphite with red edging for Caio, both elegant enough for this âball.â
In theory, Junkook looked even better, his hair and suit glowing in pink. But his sumptuous outfit failed to camouflage how strung out and nervous he was. His voice squeaked and his hands shook.
Jun-hee looked fabulous, spoke softly, and even made sure they ate before leaving the platter. Though Nexus did the cooking, cheeseburgers with cassava fries. They needed to buy some fresh vegetables, their stock having gone to slime.
At the Palace, having said four words to Nexus â âHow do you do?â â Park Bong switched to Korean. Judging from the way the Kims cringed under his barrage of pissy comments, they were getting chewed out. Nexus could have translated this, but didnât care to listen to grownups behaving badly.
âWhat is a Loomis fruit?â He eyed a bright red lumpy thing on a nearby table. Supper concluded, the table had been cleared of the astonishing quantity of pickle dishes involved in feeding a âKoreanâ â born on planet Nozomu. Only centerpieces remained. The dimpled blob in a basket reminded him of the Loomis fruit cartoon from their electrolyte drink, while their new nanites sweated toxins from their bodies.
He spoke to Caio, but his volume control missed. Park Bong replied, âWhat are you, a four year old?â
Nexus snarled a lip at him. âIâm not your son. If I were, Iâd deck you. Mind if I dissect your fruit?â
That last was over his shoulder, as Caio dragged him to the fruit. Once there, Nexus
